The six-week stretch when Independence turns into a music town
Two festivals bookend the run, and they are within a mile of each other.
St. Cecilia's Labor Day Festival returns to the parish grounds at 5313 Madison Pike over the Labor Day weekend. The Karate Girls headline one of the earlier nights, and on Monday, September 7, the parish stage hosts Grammy-nominated Five for Fighting, the act behind "Superman" and "100 Years." The show closes out the festival's family day, and the parish has confirmed the booking on its festival site. It is a self-guided route with a map provided by organizers, visitors can meet farmers, learn about crops or livestock, take part in hayrides or produce tastings, and some farms offer goods for sale. The event is free.
For a city that sits squarely between suburban Kenton County and its more rural southern edge, this is the closest thing on the calendar to a proper rural weekend. It is also one of the few local events that gives kids an unmediated look at what "Southern Kenton County" actually looks like once you cross past the last cul-de-sac on KY-17.
Where to eat when you do not want to leave town
The dining conversation in Independence has shifted over the last twelve months. Spear Ridge Café now runs locations in both Florence and Independence, and the concept sets itself apart from the drive-thru corridor. Kids eat free on Tuesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. with an adult meal, dine-in only, ages 12 and under, and there are rotating art nights with paint nights, pottery, and terrariums.
Two useful things to know if you are running back-to-back errands during festival weekends:
- The Kenton County Farmers' Market runs Saturdays at the Kenton County Court House on Madison Pike, opening early enough to hit before the fairgrounds gates open.
- Sterling Staggs Park at 5105 Madison Pike is where the American Legion Moon Brothers Post 275 holds its June Flag Retirement Ceremony, and it stays open through the fall for anyone who wants a quieter loop than Memorial Park.
Two projects finally moving that everyone has asked about
Independence residents have been watching two long-vacant sites for years. Both moved in July.
The first is the Ohio Valley Goodwill store at KY-17 and McCullum Pike. Ohio Valley Goodwill Industries broke ground on the new Independence store in July 2026, converting a long-vacant property into an 18,000-square-foot retail destination as part of a five-year, $230 million strategy to reach 30 stores across the region by 2030. When it opens, it will be Goodwill's third location in Northern Kentucky and its first in Kenton County. The store is set to open in early 2027, tentatively January or February depending on when the land purchase closes.
The second is Master Provisions. The organization opened a new 30,000-square-foot headquarters at 10205 Toebben Drive in May, nearly double its previous facility, with more vertical rack space and larger cooler and freezer capacity. If you have volunteered at the old space, the operational scale of the new one is a different animal.
Neither of these projects is a "coming soon" retail signage story. They are the kind of quiet civic infill that changes the daily texture of a neighborhood over a five-year window, and they are both happening on the same two-mile stretch of KY-17.
